Under the hammer of Francis Briest and the direction of Bruno Jaubert, the Impressionist & Modern Art department organises two major auction sessions each year, showcasing private collections and major works from the artistic movements of the late 19th and first half of the 20th centuries: Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Pointillism, Cubism, Fauvism, Dadaism, Futurism, Surrealism, etc.

These prestigious auctions are a must for international collectors and art lovers. They offer high-quality works at auction with exceptional results: €6.1m for Aristide Maillol’s La Rivière in 2013, €3.6m for Auguste Rodin’s Andromède in 2017, €7.1m for Vincent Van Gogh’s Raccommodeuses de filets dans les dunes in 2018, €9.5m for Paul Gauguin’s Te Bourao (II) in 2019, and €2.9m for Portrait de David D. Bourliouk by Mikhail Larionov in 2021.

Artcurial prepares the fifth edition of the sale event

Following the success of its previous editions, Monaco Sculptures returns this summer for a fifth session. Last year's sale totalled €2.3m including fees, and featured a unique monumental work by César entitled Hommage à Eiffel, which fetched €393,600, and a magnificent 1967 sculpture by Gio Ponti entitled Angel, which sold for €262,400.

On 5th and 6th December 2023, Artcurial held its major Impressionist & Modern Art, Post-War & Contemporary and Twenty One Contemporary auctions. The Modern Art section highlighted some truly outstanding works by Kees Van Dongen, René Magritte and Fernando Botero, as well as an exquisite bronze by Edgar Degas. The Post-War & Contemporary auction presented “Piazza San Marco al sole”, a work by Lucio Fontana from his Venice series, as well as works by Anna-Eva Bergman, Antoni Tàpies and Jean-Paul Riopelle. The Twenty One Contemporary sale featured works by artists such as Dran, Claire Tabouret, Tadashi Kawamata, Kaws, Xavier Veilhan, Zanele Muholi and Godwin Champs Namuyimba.

On 20th October 2023, in parallel with Paris+ par Art Basel, Artcurial auctioned the Eclectic Eye collection coming from a London apartment, and assembled in over 20 years by discerning collectors. This was a rare, cutting-edge collection that brought together objects and periods: from the great modern artists Berthe Morisot and Pierre Bonnard, to contemporaries Peter Doig and Olafur Eliasson, as well as rare 18th-century furniture and exceptional Chinese and Sèvres porcelain. This collection of nearly 160 lots represented a unique journey into the free and intuitive spirit of collectors.

Modern & Contemporary Art Sale in Basel, Live Broadcast in Paris

In 2023, Artcurial expanded to Switzerland: the auction house Beurret Bailly Widmer Auktionen became Artcurial Beurret Bailly Widmer. Following this acquisition, the traditional sale of Modern & Contemporary Art of the Swiss auction house was held on 21st June 2023 in Basel, and was broadcasted live at Artcurial in Paris. More than 330 lots were auctioned, including artworks by Eduardo Chillida, Maurice Denis, Diego Giacometti, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Günther Uecker and Andy Warhol.

The Impressionist & Modern Art department presented a magnificent collection of eight Surrealist works at its prestigious sale on 7th June 2023. René Magritte, Paul Delvaux, Francis Picabia, Salvador Dalí, Man Ray, Max Ernst, Pierre Roy and Félix Labisse were all on sale, displaying in a unique way the onirism inherent to the movement. With its variety of subjects and techniques, this collection of works was a veritable “Surrealist Room”, allowing to grasp the manifold components of dreams and the different paths of Surrealism.

On 7th June 2023, Artcurial auctioned the works from the estate of the composer and conductor Pierre Boulez. Comprising paintings, watercolours, drawings and prints, the collection bears witness to the links that the composer forged with painters throughout his long career: Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, Alejandro Otero, Jean Tinguely, Alberto Giacometti, Joan Miró, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Zao Wou-Ki, as well as works by Paul Klee, Jean Cocteau, Philip Guston, Pierre Soulages, Francis Bacon, Bernard Saby and many others.
