On 25th November, Artcurial dispersed the collection of an amateur at the sale entitled An Apartment overlooking the Seine. Gathering old masters and modern paintings, Asian art, neoclassical furniture and silverware, the sale of the collection totalled nearly €2m with 100% of the lots sold under Stéphane Aubert’s hammer.
Spotlight on Asian Art
Asian art was particularly well represented in this collection with several exceptional pieces. The jewel of the sale, a rare pair of Qianlong imperial vases from the Château de Ferrières in the time of Baron James de Rothschild, fetched €356,864 including fees. In addition, prices go through the roof for a pair of rectangular gilt bronze and cloisonné panels sold for €107,584 as well as a pair of gilt-bronze and jade inlaid jardinieres, from the Qianlong period sold for €43,296, each tripling their estimate.
Success for Classical Art
Classical art lots also generated strong interest, far exceeding their estimates, such as the important Virgin and Child by Girolamo Alibrandi, which sold for €133,824, or a pair of oil paintings by the 19th century English school representing two views of Venice, which fetched €190,240. As for furniture, an exceptional Regence “bureau plat” sold for €47,232, while a pair of Louis XV “fauteuils a la reine” with the prestigious stamp of Jean Nicolas Blanchard sold for €31,488, eight times their estimate.
