Percival Lafer and Brazilian Design honoured at Artcurial

Born in São Paulo in 1936, Percival Lafer soon showed a keen interest in design and architecture. After completing his studies, he and his brothers took over the family furniture business, Móveis Lafer. Renowned for his unique approach to furniture design, Percival Lafer is particularly famous for his modernist creations, which combine functionality, comfort and aesthetics. Lafer's work is often characterised by clean lines, organic shapes and a harmonious integration of materials.

The 17 creations to be presented by Artcurial at the auction on 27th February bear witness to the legacy of this pioneer of Brazilian Design. In particular, collectors will be able to acquire a pair of armchairs mod. MP-01 from 1961 (est. €5,000 - €7,000) or an armchair mod. MP-113 created in the 1970s with a foam structure, estimated at between €3,000 and €5,000.

Percival Lafer's creations will be on show alongside a major private European collection featuring some of the great names in Brazilian design, such as José Zanine Caldas and his sculptural armchair known as Namoradeira, dating from 1970 (est. €80,000 - 120,000), and the duo Anna Maria & Oscar Niemeyer, whose chaise longue known as Rio is estimated at between €12,000 and €18,000. A large dining table with a red lacquered glass top by Joaquim Tenreiro (est. €20,000 - 30,000) will stand next to a pair of Tripé armchairs designed in 1948 by Lina Bo Bardi (est. €25,000 - 35,000) and a suite of twelve rosewood chairs by Sergio Rodrigues (est. €20,000 - 30,000).
