Au sein de l'équipe Toyota Team Europe, la Celica a écrit de très belles pages de l'histoire des rallyes internationaux. Mais c'est à partir de la quatrième génération du modèle, la ST 165, que les premiers grands succès ont été signés en Championnat du Monde des Rallyes. Ainsi, le premier titre mondial de Toyota dans cette discipline a été décroché en 1990 par Carlos Sainz et Luis Moya.
Avec ses quatre roues motrices et son moteur turbo, la Celica était une voiture extrêmement compétitive, surtout quand les problèmes de fiabilité qu'elle a connu à ses débuts ont pu trouver leur solution.
La voiture que nous proposons ici a été une des actrices de cette passionnante aventure. Elle a fait partie de l'équipe Toyota en 1991 et a été construite selon les spécifications officielles de cette époque, comme en témoigne le certificat d'authenticité délivré par Toyota et signé par Ernst Kopp (alors chef d'atelier F1-Workshop) et John Day (directeur d'écurie, F1-Workshop).
Parmi ses succès (indiqués dans le certificat d'authenticité), cette voiture a été confiée à Carlos Sainz et Luis Moya pour le Rallye de l'Acropole 1991. Elle portait le n°1 et l'équipage espagnol a remporté la deuxième place, derrière Juhan Kankkunen (Lancia Delta Integrale). L'année précédente, lors de ce même rallye, Sainz et Moya à bord d'une Celica de même génération avaient remporté la victoire, la première de la saison pour Toyota.
Toujours lors de la saison 1991, Marc Duez (avec Klaus Wicha comme copilote) a pris part au Rallye du RAC comme pilote d'usine sur cette même voiture. Elle affichait cette fois le n°19 et Duez a terminé à la huitième place.
En 1994, la voiture a été rachetée par Ian Greer, un pilote irlandais, avant de courrir en 2000 dans les mains d'Arthurs Cathal qui la céda au propriétaire actuel en 2002, un collectionneur belge exigeant. Passionné par les voitures de rallye, ce dernier l'a confiée à Ernst Kopp, chef d'atelier chez Toyota Team Europe et aujourd'hui chef d'atelier chez Hyundai Motorsport, pour une remise en état et une préparation aux courses historiques, en respectant sa configuration d'origine. Un ensemble de travaux extrêmement complet a été effectué pour cette restauration, et nous encourageons vivement les acheteurs intéressés à en consulter la liste qui est jointe au dossier de la voiture.
Ainsi rénovée, cette Toyota Celica a pris part au Rallye de San Marin et à l'Eifel Rallye Festival, à Daun. Elle se présente aujourd'hui dans un état vraiment impeccable. La présentation correspond à celle du Rallye de l'Acropole 1991, son plus brillant résultat.
Cette voiture combine un nombre enviable de qualités : en plus de constituer une référence de l'histoire des rallyes et de Toyota en compétition, elle s'est classée deuxième lors d'une épreuve internationale majeure, entre les mains d'un des pilotes de rallye les plus titrés (deux fois champion du monde avec Toyota) ; de plus, elle représente aujourd'hui une machine très compétitive pour les rallyes historiques où son incontestable authenticité de voiture d'usine lui ouvrira les portes des plus belles épreuves.
Dans ce domaine où les voitures sont souvent détruites ou modifiées, il est difficile de trouver mieux.

As part of the Toyota Team Europe squad, Celica was definitely part of history books when it comes to international rallies. It is however from the ST 165, the model's fourth generation, that first major successes in World Rally would be accomplished. In that respect, Toyota's first world title in this field was won by Carlos Sainz and Luis Moya in 1990.
The Celica was an extremely competitive car thanks to its four-wheel drive and turbo engine, especially when reliability issues arising in the early days could be solved there and then.
The car we are offering here has been one of the big stars of this exhilarating adventure. It was part of the Toyota team in 1991 and was built according to official specifications of this period, as evidenced by the certificate of authenticity issued by Toyota and signed by Ernst Kopp (F1-Workshop head of workshop) and John Day (F1-Workshop team principal)
Among its successes (stated in the certificate of authenticity), this car was entrusted to Carlos Sainz and Luis Moya for the 1991 Acropolis Rally. It bore the number 1 and the Spanish crew took second place, behind Juhan Kankkunen (Lancia Delta Integrale). During the same rally the previous year, Sainz and Moya had won it with a Celica from the same generation, the first of the season for Toyota. Also during the 1991 season, Marc Duez (with Klaus Wicha as co-driver) took part in the RAC Rally as a factory driver in the same car. It was at that time having the number 19 and Duez finished in eighth place.
In 1994, the car was purchased by an Irish racing driver Ian Greer, before racing in 2000 with Arthurs Cathal who sold the car in 2002 , to its current owner, a meticulous Belgian collector. Passionate about rally cars, he entrusted Toyota Team Europe's workshop manager Ernst Kopp, now head of workshop at Hyundai Motorsport, to restore the car and prepare it for historic racing events as well as keeping its original configuration. An extensive amount of work was completed for this restoration and we strongly encourage interested buyers to consult the list attached to the car's file. This renovated Toyota Celica took part in the Rally San Marino and Eifel Rally Festival in Daun. It is offered today in a truly immaculate condition which coincides to the way it was presented for the 1991 Acropolis Rally, its most impressive achievement.
This car contains a number of desirable qualities: in addition to being a reference in the history of rallies and Toyota in motor-racing, it was ranked second in a major international event in the hands of one of the most victorious rally drivers then (twice world champion with Toyota). Furthermore, it is today a highly competitive machine for historic rallies and will open doors to the finest events, thanks to its indisputable authenticity as a factory car. In a world where cars often get destroyed or modified, it is undoubtedly difficult to find better.
