The third auction dedicated to the Maurice Houdayer Library will take place on Wednesday 4th May 2022 at 10:30 am and 2:00 pm at Artcurial.
Bibliophiles will find the great names in art bookbinding as well as some fine illustrated books and important first editions: Le Frère Mendiant, illustrated by Picasso, Peau-Brune, illustrated by Schmied, more than 25 bindings by the extravagant Knoderer, the Soirées de Médan offered to Raffaëlli by the authors, a monumental binding by Pierre-Lucien Martin for Éluard and his painter friends, etc.
This session will also highlight the ancient and 19th century books of the collection, such as first editions of Le Rouge et le Noir, Le Coffret de santal, Madame Bovary and Salammbô, Gide’s Paludes (signed for José Maria de Heredia), Les Misérables and fine illustrated editions of La Fontaine or Marguerite de Navarre. The “fin-de-siècle” period will be documented by Montorgueil and Uzanne.
In addition, a small section will contain curiosa books, including illustrated works by Bellmer, Chimot, Kupka and Laboureur.
