On Monday 11th September, Artcurial will open its second half-year with a charity sale dedicated to supporting contemporary art. Benefiting the Fondation des Artistes, the sale will showcase the work of 76 artists from the contemporary scene who have been exhibited by the Premier Regard association over its 20 years of activity, including Marion Charlet, Anne Laure Sacriste, Étienne Pottier, Thibaut Huchard, Guillaume Talbi, My-Lan Hoang-Thuy, Latifa Echakhch and many others. With prices starting at €500, the 90 lots offered at auction are a unique opportunity for collectors to acquire works by artists now recognised by institutions and the art market. All proceeds from the sale will be donated to the Fondation des Artistes in support of its work with artists.
Premier Regard
Founded in 2001 on the initiative of Laurence Fontaine and Laurence Poirel, it was thanks to the excellent selection of its artistic committee that the Association Premier Regard sur la Création Artistique offered young artists their first opportunity to show and exhibit their work in a space located in the heart of Paris's 15th arrondissement.
With their increased visibility, several works acquired from the Association Premier Regard have subsequently joined the drawings collection of the Centre Pompidou, while others have entered leading public and private collections. Some of the artists have been awarded prestigious prizes: the Golden Lion for the best pavilion at the Venice Biennale, the Marcel Duchamp Prize, the Drawing Now Prize, the Canson Prize, the Yishu8 Prize, the Prince Pierre of Monaco Prize, the Coal spécial Océans Prize, the Bourse du Talent de la photographie, and the Prix de la Photo Rencontres Arles. Two of them have been residents at the Villa Medici in Rome.
Fondation des Artistes
Created in 1976 from two exceptional bequests, the Hôtel Salomon de Rothschild in Paris and the Nogent-sur-Marne estate, the Fondation des Artistes' mission is to support visual artists at every crucial stage in their careers: when they graduate from art school, when they want to live abroad, when they need production resources, a workspace, a place to show their work - with MABA, its contemporary art centre - or even, in their old age, when they want to get out of their isolation - with the Maison nationale des artistes, a unique retirement home.
The meeting between these two philanthropic entities, driven by the same desire to support artists and contemporary creation, was a foregone conclusion. Many of the personalities from the art world who have served on Premier Regard's artistic committee are also friends, advisors and partners of the Fondation des Artistes, and quite naturally some of the 90 artists supported by the Association were later supported by the Fondation.
After 20 years of particularly generous activity, and because of the pandemic, the Association Premier Regard has ceased its activity and has decided, as an extension of its action, to offer the collection of 90 works of art it held following the exhibitions it produced, to the Fondation des Artistes for a charity sale orchestrated by Arnaud Oliveux, on 11th September at Artcurial.
All the proceeds will be used to supplement the resources of the Fondation des Artistes and further strengthen its commitment to helping artists.
