On the occasion of the Contemporary African Art sale on 31st May, Artcurial will offer a selection of modern and contemporary artworks that pay tribute to the female model. Numerous artists from the African contemporary scene will also be highlighted, such as Godwin Champs Namuyimba, Omar Ba, Barthélémy Toguo, Aboudia, Joseph Ntensibe, Jordan Tchoffo, and Peter Ngugi.
The sale will open with a canvas from the 1990s by Diatta Seck, estimated at €2,500 - 4,500, whose style is characteristic of the Dakar School. In his work, dreamlike figures move in the water, enhanced by reflections of warm, shimmering colors.
The auction will continue with a set of artworks by East African artists, who have in common that the female model or self-portrait is their favorite genre. Among them, Ugandan artist Godwin Champs Namuyimba, one of the most sought-after artists on the African contemporary scene, will be featured with his painting entitled Blue Smoke, estimated at €20,000 - 40,000. Cameroon will be represented by the young artist Anjel, who depicts the pressure exerted by consumer society on young women as seen in the work Gods Supremacy II, estimated at €6,000 - 8,000.
Jordan Tchoffo draws inspiration from vintage photos of famous artists from Mali and Ghana and pays tribute to the post-colonial style of the 1970s, as with NIFA, estimated at €4,000 - 6,000. Artist Fredy Obou Gbais will also be featured alongside Peter Ngugi with his work Sunday best estimated at €8,000 - 12,000.
In addition, the sale will present a magnificent set of three artworks by Aboudia, one of the most fashionable artists in the contemporary African art sector, one of which is estimated at €70,000 - 90,000.
In parallel to the auction exhibition, Artcurial will present a fixed-price exhibition entitled Ghana Blues until 30th May at the Hôtel Marcel Dassault, featuring artworks by young artists from Ghana including Raphael Adjetey Adjei Mayne, Kofi Bright Awuyah and Maxwell Boadi.
