On 20th October, in parallel with Paris+ par Art Basel, Artcurial will be auctionning the Eclectic Eye collection from a London apartment. Assembled over the space of 20 years by discerning collectors, this is a rare, cutting-edge collection that brings together objects and periods. From the great modern artists Berthe Morisot and Pierre Bonnard, to contemporaries Peter Doig and Olafur Eliasson, as well as rare 18th-century furniture and exceptional Chinese and Sèvres porcelain. This collection of nearly 160 lots will invite you on a unique journey into the free and intuitive spirit of collectors.
Contemporary Art
The Contemporary chapter, which includes 120 lots, is the largest in the collection. Colour is at the center of attention, as much in the works of Olafur Eliasson, whose Colour Experiment n°43, estimated €120,000 - 180,000, which develops a reflection on light and its spectrum, as in the red-dominated watercolors of Martha Jungwirth, estimated at €70,000 - 90,000.
They are accompanied by Bernard Frize's skilfully composed abstract compositions, including the acrylic and resin on canvas Tin, estimated €100,000 - 150,000. Peter Doig's work is figurative, but his attention to colour is so pronounced that it evokes abstraction in Driveway, an oil on canvas, estimated €300,000 - 500,000, which depicts solitude and man's relationship with nature.
Modern Art
The Impressionist & Modern creations presented in this collection offer a remarkable selection of works on paper: we note this very fine pastel by Berthe Morisot Bords de Seine à Epinay from 1881, estimated €100,000 - 150,000, which joins Edgar Degas’s 1887 study sheet Femme nuedebout, estimated €60,000 - 80,000; the magnificent blue values of Frank Kupka's gouache Bleus mouvants from 1923, estimated €60,000 - 80,000, echo the 18th century porcelains.
Valmier, Ferat, Dufy and Spilliaert bring a variety of expression that lends a particularly joyful tone to the collection. Finally, two major works stand out: an oil on canvas by Pierre Bonnard, Poissons dans un bassin from 1943, estimated €400,000 - 600,000, offering an enchantment of colours and scenographic effects, and the warm palette of a painting by Victor Brauner, Sans titre (Untitled) from 1931, estimated €80,000 - 120,000, extending the surrealist universe.
Furniture & Works of Art
The key words of this chapter are the search for symbioses and confrontations. It combines a passion for Chinese and Sèvres porcelain - represented in particular by a pair of mounted vases from the Qing dynasty, estimated €30,000 - €50,000 - with a taste for pieces of furniture with sober and architectural lines, including a Louis XVI period console desk stamped by Ferdinand Bury, estimated €20,000 - €30,000. These pieces will also stand alongside 16th-century Venetian and Limoges enamels from prestigious collections such as Yves Saint-Laurent, Rothschild and Poniatowski.
