€47m in 2022 for the Old Master & 19th Century Art sales
 

Under the hammer of Matthieu Fournier, the Old Master & 19th Century Art department held three auctions on 9th and 10th November – including two collections – which totalled €10.8m. These end a year marked by exceptional results and the sale of numerous private collections in addition to the regular auctions.

The evening began with the sale of the Baron and Baroness Vaxelaire Collection, consisting of paintings by important Flemish artists of the 16th and 17th centuries. The auction totalled €4,117,136 including fees and a world record for an exceptional set of ten tondi by Abel Grimmer which fetched €1,538,400 including fees. The Wedding Dance in the Open Air by Pieter Brueghel the Younger also made a name for itself at the auction, fetching €314,880, as did the painting Winter Landscape with a bird trap by Josef van Bredael, inspired by Pieter Brueghel, which fetched €170,560.

During the evening sale, we witnessed 9 pre-emptions or purchases by institutions as well as world records, such as a painting by Laurent de La Hyre, Narcissus, which fetched €918,400, and a drawing by Léonard Thiry which sold for €55,104. All the lots sold reached €6,348,825 including fees.

 

Finally, the Romantic Paris, Brooks Beaulieu Collection sale closed the week with a total of €317,832, 15 pre-emptions or purchases by institutions and a world record for a bronze by Antonin Moine, Fall of an ancient horseman sold for €28,864 including fees.
