Monaco Sculptures
An exceptional monumental artwork Hommage à Eiffel by César at auction

On the occasion of the Monaco Auction Week from 14th to 19th July, the Principality opens once again the Société des Bains de Mer’s gardens and establishments to the Monaco Sculptures sale. Designed around the leading artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, this 4th edition features a unique monumental artwork signed by César, Hommage à Eiffel.

CÉSAR (1921-1998) Hommage à Eiffel - 1989 Hauteur : 3,5 m Estimation : 350 000 - 550 000 €
César (1921-1998)
Hommage à Eiffel, 1989
Height: 3,5 m
Estimate: €350,000 - 550,000

The plaque presented here comes directly from César's estate. César took advantage of the project to reduce the weight of the Eiffel Tower in the early 1980s to recover several pieces of the monument. Those original pieces form the structure of this plaque. Produced in the wake of the monumental work Hommage à Eiffel created for the Fondation Cartier started in 1984, this 3-metres-high plaque reflects the appropriation of real elements through their “poetic recycling”, one of the founding principles of the Nouveaux Réalistes with whom César spent time with. Above all, César's plaque celebrates his fascination with Gustave Eiffel as a person and as the famous engineer behind the Eiffel Tower whose centenary is celebrated this year.

Estimated €350,000 - 550,000, this sculpture, unique in its history, will attract the interest of collectors and enthusiasts worldwide. The Monaco Sculptures auction, which will be held on 18th July at the Hôtel Hermitage Monte-Carlo, is a double tribute to the architectural genius Gustave Eiffel, to whom we also owe the dome of the winter garden at the Hotel Hermitage, and to César, sculptor and iron virtuoso.

Hommage à Eiffel is part of the Monaco Sculptures exhibition, alongside around forty other artworks on display until the end of August in the Société des Bains de Mer Monte-Carlos’s gardens and establishments: a real open-air museum takes over the streets of Monte-Carlo for the summer.
