The Shadoks and Martine in the spotlight

On 10th April 2024, Artcurial will hold its first sale of the year dedicated to comic strips. On this occasion, the Comic Strips department will auction a previously unseen selection of 49 works by Jacques Rouxel, the father of the Shadoks. These brightly coloured, cheekily humorous drawings are as modern as they are topical. The department also celebrates the 70th anniversary of Martine, Marcel Marlier's famous heroine.

The sale, which is exceptionally rich and diverse, will also present a collection of drawings signed by some of the biggest names in manga, including Osamu Tezuka, Shigeru Mizuki and Eichiro Oda. It will also include original drawings by some of the greatest cartoonists, including Albert Uderzo, Hugo Pratt, Jacques Tardi, Joann Sfar and many others.

Jacques Rouxel & the Shadoks
49 works from the Shadoks will be auctioned for the first time on 10th April. The Shadoks series, created in 1968 by Jacques Rouxel, was one of the first humorous cartoon series. Broadcast in France until 1974, it caused one of the first controversies on French television, with some viewers accusing its colourful birds of absurd and impertinent humour of contributing to the intellectual impoverishment of society. Claude Piéplu lent them his voice, and Jean Yann even created a programme called Le courrier des Shadoks in which he read out the many letters received from viewers. It is astonishing to see that even more than 50 years after their creation, the serious themes tackled with humour by Jacques Rouxel are still relevant today.

The 40 lots on offer include original plates, like the double plate La Libido (est. €6,000 – 9,000), as well as drawings such as Les bons comptes font les bons amis (est. €2,000 – 3,000), strips (est. €2,000 – 4,000), celluloid prints (est. €700 – 900) as well as lithographs.
