Two classical art collections in the spotlight at Artcurial
 

Artcurial will auction two prestigious collections on 21^st September entitled From Watteau to Vuillard and Château du Marais. Drawings, paintings, works of art and pieces of furniture will be presented for sale.

From Watteau to Vuillard or French Refinement
This sale will feature an attractive collection of drawings, paintings, works of art and furniture that was tastefully gathered in the first half of the 20^th century with the prestige of having remained in the same family ever since.

Rare paintings, drawings and sculptures spanning from the 16^th to the early 20^th century – with a focus on the French 18^th century and its exquisite refinement – will be presented, including works by François Boucher, Antoine Watteau, Jean-Honoré Fragonard, Édouard Vuillard, Jacques-André Portail, Hubert Robert and Charles-Nicolas Cochin.

An exceptional Jean-Honoré Fragonard drawing after a self-portrait by Rembrandt, estimated at €20,000 - 30,000, and a drawing by Antoine Watteau, estimated at €50,000 - 80,000, will be included in the sale. Two paintings by Édouard Vuillard, one of which is estimated at €80,000 - 120,000, commissioned directly from the artist, also testify to the modernity of the collection.

The second part of the sale will be devoted to 18^th century furniture and decorative arts. It will feature some rare works including a suite of three late 16^th century Bruges tapestries depicting episodes in the story of the lovers Gombault and Macée, estimated at €40,000 - 60,000, and a magnificent Louis XV celadon porcelain mounted ewer from the Qing dynasty, estimated at €30,000 - 50,000. Finally, prestigious stamps are found alongside furniture, notably an elegant Louis XVI satinwood demi-lune commode by Lacroix, estimated at €15,000 - 20,000.

Château du Marais: sale of part of the collections
Artcurial will also be auctioning on 21^st September part of the Château du Marais collection, a neoclassical masterpiece that belonged to the 7^th Duke of Noailles, which was bought and decorated by Boni de Castellane and Anna Gould in 1897. A rare set of four Empire ormolu three-branch wall-lights “aux cors” based on a model by Edme-Jean Gallien and Pierre Bureaux, estimated at €100,000 - 120,000, and an exceptional part of the Dorset-Hussey service in Sèvres soft paste porcelain with rich frize decoration from the late 18^th century, estimated at €50,000 - 70,000, will be presented at the auction.

The attentive connoisseur will find in this sale the care taken by the Duke and Duchess of Castellane to the “deliciously faded” decoration of the Marais. Each piece of furniture or object was a discreet witness to the balls, receptions and hunts that enlivened the rooms of the chateau and saw the best society of the Roaring Twenties come and go. This is the case, for example, of a carved marble bust of Louis XV, King of France and Navarre, after Jean Baptiste II Lemoyne, estimated at €15,000 - 25,000, or an exceptional Louis XVI parcel- gilt and cream lacquered mobilier de salon, including four sofas, two armchairs and two chairs, stamped by Claude I Sené, estimated at €40,000 - 60,000.
