In a particularly dynamic context, the session on April 17th 2024, will be a privileged showcase for the contemporary French scene, highlighting the French Touch through such notable works as Invader's Alias PA_810 (estimated at €60,000 - €80,000). At the same time, we will delve into the world of old school graffiti, highlighting iconic figures such as Futura 2000 with his work Untitled (estimated at €50,000 - €70,000) and JonOne. You will also have the opportunity to discover some of the leading artists of international urban art, such as Banksy, Shepard Fairey and Vhils.
The sale takes place in a dynamic period marked by a number of major events, including the 8th Urban Art Fair at the Carreau du Temple from April 25th to 28th, the development of an urban art collection at the Centre Pompidou and the eagerly-awaited Invader Space Station exhibition.
FRENCH TOUCH
The Urban Project will be an opportunity to showcase the French urban art scene through its leading representatives, notably the artist JR, famous for his photographic collages in public spaces. Collectors will have the opportunity to acquire emblematic pieces such as the photographic print The Wrinkles of the City, Havana, Rafael Lorenzo y Obdulia Manzano (estimated at €22,000 - €35,000), as well as an original woodblock from the same series.
The sale will also feature several works by Invader, the world-famous invader of urban space. He is currently on display at the former Libération offices in Paris to mark his 1,500th invasion of the city. His assemblage of 441 Rubik's cubes on Plexiglas, Rubik Killers (estimated at €150,000 - €250,000), will be accompanied by the mosaic Alias PA_810 (estimated at €60,000 - €80,000).
While the Centre Pompidou has recently added to its collection of urban art several works by Gérard Zlotykamien, Artcurial will also be presenting some of his works on paper dating from 1987 (estimated at €2,500 - €3,500). The sale will also be an opportunity to highlight the French pioneers who left their mark on the urban culture, such as Ernest Pignon-Ernest, Jacques Villeglé, Miss.Tic and André, as well as their heirs DRAN, Maye and Saype.
GRAFITTI OLD SCHOOL
A dedicated section of the sale will be devoted to old school graffiti, mainly American. The sketch, an essential element of graffiti culture, will be showcased in a collection of thirty works on paper. At the same time, the illustrious names of Rammellzee and Futura will be taking their place, notably with a magnificent acrylic and spray paint composition on canvas dating from 1987 by Futura (estimated at €50,000 - €70,000), a pioneer of urban art and a key player in the hip-hop movement. This piece will be accompanied by a large canvas by JonOne from 1991, from the Hôpital Éphémère period (estimated at €70,000 - €90,000), as well as a work by Hopare, who is gaining increasing attention in this evolving art scene.
LES INCONTOURNABLES DE L’ART URBAIN INTERNATIONAL
Finally, the sale will feature works by major figures of the international urban art scene, such as Banksy, renowned for his stencil paintings that convey political and poetic messages, while taking a critical and caustic look at society and its institutions. An eloquent example is Grappling Hook from 2007 (estimated at €100,000 - €150,000), which may or may not divert the crucifix from its original function.
Various creations by Shepard Fairey, another emblematic activist of this scene, known under the pseudonym OBEY, will also be on show, notably with the painting Revolution Woman from 2016 (estimated at €50,000 - €70,000).
Vhils, KAWS, Barry McGee, ROA, EVOL and Todd James complete this non-exhaustive selection from a scene that is now coming of age, with its profound questioning of contemporary society.
