Silver print signed
40 x 30 cm
Estimate: €8,000 - €12,000

Following the success of the first auction of photographs from the Stéphane Kovalsky collection in 2016, Artcurial is pleased to present the second part of the sale dedicated to Willy Ronis, which will take place on 15th December in Paris. In parallel with Paris Photo, a selection of works from the sale will be unveiled on 10th November. The auction will include nearly 200 iconic works that trace the career of this great artist, whose colleagues included Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Doisneau. All of the photographs offered at auction come from one of the collections of the artist's grandson, Stéphane Kovalsky. Through this sale, he wishes to pay a personal tribute to his grandfather, but also to recall his place in the history of photography in the second half of the 20th century.

Willy Ronis has always preferred to shoot in the field. He attended the workers' strikes of the 1930s and decided to become an independent photographer. After World War II, he returned to immortalizing scenes of daily life. At the same time, he joined the Groupe des XV and the Rapho agency, founding the French Humanist School. Paris and its surroundings became his favourite subjects. He never ceased to capture the simple moments of the inhabitants of the capital, the raw beauty of the city.

“Among these images are some of the most emblematic and iconic ones of Paris, Provence or rarer, even unknown ones, like those of the GDR. I think my grandfather would be happy to know that his photos continue to exist,” concludes Stéphane Kovalsky, about his grandfather's work.
